For a brief time in the 15th century, there were two Popes--one in Rome and a challenger in Avignone France. All Popes since the early history fo the Church have lived in Rome.

To correct what was said above, there was a period in which there were 3 Popes. There was a pope in Avignon France, and he had his share of followers, and the other in Rome and his followers. Both of them excommunicated the other and called for the death of the other. Eventually in order to settle it another pope was selected to settle things and he excommunicated both the others. I think eventually everyone settled down when one of the popes died and the other gave up.
