Why does the traditional Catholic movement believe in chaperones when it comes to dating?
The traditional Catholic movement consists of Catholics who reject the changes from the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). They attend the traditional Latin Mass and practice Catholicism as it used to be before Vatican II. For some reason they believe chaperones are very necessary when dating, no matter what age you are. My grandparents lived well before Vatican II and they told me they never heard of using chaperones at all ... ever. They said they were never chaperoned and everyone else they knew around them were never chaperoned either. Basically chaperoning didn't go on before Vatican II. So why do traditional Catholics believe in using chaperones when that didn't go on before Vatican II?

Dunno if it's fair to say that's exclusively an SSPX attitude; not even sure if all of them hold it. It had to be 10-15 years ago when I was a protestant that I heard there was a school of thought that suggested the whole dating system we have in place needs over-hauled. This whole business of finding One True Love, going steady and then breaking up - all at the age of 9 or 10 - was teaching kids how to bond with one person and then break the bonds. In essence, it was teaching kids how to get used to the idea of divorce. I'll criticize TradCats when I think they deserve it. But if they want to give this new approach a whirl, more power to them.
