How many people live in Vatican City other than the pope and clergy? Do they have schools, offices, shopping places, etc. ? I'm not talking about St. Peter's Basilica, but the actual city itself outside.

It is a city like all others in that it has a population, stores, schools, police, laws, etc. The similarity to other cities ends there. For example: The politics of Vatican City takes place in an absolute theocratic monarchy, in which the head of the Catholic Church takes power. The Pope exercises ex officio principal legislative, executive, and judicial power over the State of Vatican City (an entity distinct from the Holy See), which is a rare case of a non-hereditary monarchy.
